Webcomics have changed video...

I came across this video  about the ways webcomics have changed over the last few years!

It's actually mostly about the social aspects - the fact that the goal used to be to get viewers to go to your webcomic hosted on its' own website, but now most things are hosted on Tapas or Webtoon. He also goes into how social media and mobile usage has changed things.  He doesn't really talk about storytelling/format specific things (like I'm doing with javascript)

Funnily enough I'm going in the opposite direction, putting my comic on its' own site (because of it's custom layouts and js). But because mine is a short comic, intended to be released as a finished product rather than an ongoing comic to subscribe to, those main reasons for using tapas/webtoon aren't so relevant.

Something unrelated but very cool he mentioned - Flatton, which you can upload lineart to and it creates a version of flat colours (filling the gaps where the lineart is) for quicker flatting......

Found this article about queer fat male representation in comics specifically, and brings up some good general points about rep

I also read Nimona last night! I didn't take notes on length/pacing because it's almost 300 pages long therefore not that useful to the length of mine. But it was really good, and I loved how it started as a silly, simple story, but by the end it all tied together and was a really well rounded and emotional story (I cried)

This queer comics database was just started recently, and is possibly a helpful resource! (in terms of representation stuff, not hypercomic stuff)

These didn't end up being so relevant, but I grabbed a few quotes from the intros, mainly.

Distinguishing Mediality: The Problem of Identifying Forms and Features of Digital Comics

Lukas R.A. Wilde,2015

identifying different modes in specifics is less relevant than how they're used and how it's important, it's complex

talks about how infinite canvas isn't 'new' - it's a way of making historial storytelling like trajan's column, cathedral ceilings, accessible. McCloud, Bukatman

print has pages by necessity, and that has created principles of pacing, rhythm and panel delivery > connected to hyperlinks, in digital this same concept has more flexibility
-and digital comics are a new reference point that allows people to think more about the theories and properties of print comics

feature common of all webcomics i: higher degree of flexibility to choose own forms and limitations - mediality is becoming more fluid

this article is a little dated and only talks about certain kinds of webcomics, but still has some good points

Library books

Some books I got out from the library to research. A lot of the articles I've bee reading have referenced the last three, and the first two both have chapters that sounded interesting. There were quite a few other books in the library about digital comics, but they were all quite old and more about "how you can upload image files to the internet and make a website!" and "how to colour in photoshop!" - McCloud's Reinventing Comics seems like the best digital comics book available.

Research - reading

Printed out a lot of articles on digital comics - the highlighted one is this article, which talks about the ways the digital medium has been used to enhance comics and people who've done it well, to enhance the story, or ones that are just to make it 'cool'.  It also talks about what is a comic - how far it can change and still be classed as that, as opposed to becoming an animation or game.

This is obviously a slideshow for some presentation, but it seems to be about various types of comic narrative and it's development over time and there's things I can research more into.

This is an article by Caroline Campbell about Josie and the Whales

The others are articles from the library database/google scholar; Rethinking Webomics: Webcomics as a screen based medium by Dennis Kogel and Digital comics - new tools and tropes by Daniel Merlin Goodbrey
